Garlic Tip# 98
The Garlic Press and why the Garlic Chop is better…………….
#1 When you use a press the garlic is the same size every time it passes through the tiny holes. But when we cook with garlic we need it to be different sizes for different cooking applications. i.e. When frying garlic we want the chunks to be a little bigger so they don’t burn in a frying pan. (two-three turns of the chopper).
If you want to make a salad dressing or something like that you want the garlic to be very fine. Simply keep turning the chopper until you get the consistency you need.
You can also make a paste by adding salt (sea salt or kosher salt works best) to the garlic while inside the chopper. The salt will pull the moister out of the garlic to create a paste which is perfect for garlic bread.
#2 The chop is easy to clean. Simply unscrew the plate and rinse in the sink but is dishwasher safe also. The garlic press is not (some higher end ones have self cleaning mechanisms however these units typically cost a minimum or $19.99 to $29.99) easy to clean, you need to pick the garlic out of the tiny holes.
#3 Price: I decent press is a minimum of $19.99 to $29.99. Chop is $9.99 - $11.99
#4 Garlic juice. When you use the garlic press the juice gets squeezed out when you push the garlic through the screen. With the chop the juice stays within the small pieces of chopped garlic. All of the flavor crystals of the garlic are contained in the juice.
