Random Garlic Facts

If you live in the US the majority of the garlic sold in grocery stores comes from China. But did you know there is a 377% tariff on all fresh garlic being imported from China?

Why the extra duty?

Back in the early nineties China tried to take control of the US market by selling their exports at rock bottom prices. This approach took market share away from Mexico, Argentina, and domestic growers. So the Fresh Garlic Growers Association of America filed an anti-dumping petition and won their case. The ensuing 377% percent tariff staved off the Chinese for a few years but a loop hole in the legislation allowed them to creep back into the US market.

Chinese growers are able to ship through other countries and then into the US thus avoiding the tax. Today the Fresh Garlic Growers association are trying to get the legislation amended to close this loop hole but have had no luck. Today China accounts for 75% of all garlic imported into the US.

So my advice is to buy locally if you can. The garlic will last longer and taste fresher!!
